Mr. Gamaal El Attar, Director of the International Federation for Rights and Development (IFRD), met with Mr. Younes Omerjee’s cabinet, Vice President of the European Parliament, to explore strategies for joint action in the new parliamentary term.
Attending the meeting from Mr. Omerjee’s cabinet was the head of the cabinet: Radek Šeth.
Both parties agreed on the urgent need to halt the forced deportation of Syrians back to Syria and to reclassify Syria as an unsafe country.
The discussion also covered the ongoing Israeli genocidal war in Palestine, focusing on strategies to halt the importation of settlement products and to cease arms exports to Israel.
Within the broader scope of IFRD’s human rights work in the MENA, the meeting addressed freedom of expression in the Maghreb region, where high rates of arrests target dissidents. Both parties also explored ways to enhance human rights in the Gulf countries, particularly by abolishing the kafala system, which is seen as a modern form of enslavement.
The two sides agreed to schedule a larger meeting with Mr. Omerjee after his full recovery and return from Strasbourg, along with the full IFRD team in Brussels.
