Advocating for Sudanese Women’s Voices: A Week of Engagements in the European Parliament and UN

As part of our commitment to making Sudanese women’s voices heard and to advancing the fight against gender-based violence in Sudan, the International Federation for Rights and Development (IFRD) this week empowers Sudanese Women’s voices by bringing their perspectives directly in the UN and EU.

🇪🇺 At the European Parliament, we met with the teams of MEPs Michael Gahler, Barry Andrews, Hilde Vautmans, and Lukas Mandl.

🇺🇳 At the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, we contributed to debates shaping the global human rights agenda.

We were honored to be joined by Sumaya Husein, a Sudanese feminist activist, whose testimony carried the lived experiences and resilience of Sudanese women into these critical spaces.

This week also saw the impact of our lobbying efforts recognised publicly. Politico Europe reported on our successful push to cancel a European Parliament event featuring speakers affiliated with the RSF, a militia sanctioned by the EU for atrocities and systematic gender-based violence in Sudan. Thanks to swift action by MEPs, particularly MEP Sieper, this event was stopped. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/dK-zZA2f

By opening doors to decision-making platforms and closing them to those tied to perpetrators, IFRD ensures that Sudanese women are not spoken about but are instead heard by those in power. Gender-based violence in Sudan needs to be confronted with the urgency it demands.
