Activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, a peaceful mission to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, were struck by two alleged drone attacks while docked in Tunisian waters. The Portuguese-flagged “Family Boat” was hit on 9 September, and the British-flagged “Alma” the following night, both suffering fire damage but no injuries. Witnesses, including activist Miguel Duarte, reported seeing a drone hover directly above one boat before dropping an explosive device. However, Tunisia denies drone involvement and attributing the fires to internal causes.
Such attacks, on civilian aid vessels, constitute a grave violation of international law. They not only endanger lives, but also undermine humanitarian efforts and the principle of maritime safety.
IFRD demands immediate international action:
- A full investigation into the drone incidents by independent actors
- Guaranteed protection of all humanitarian missions to Gaza in both Tunisian and international waters.
- An end to actions that aim to intimidate or disrupt peaceful humanitarian solidarity with Gaza.
- Concrete action by the EU and international institutions: suspend political and economic agreements with Israel and ensure that accountability mechanisms are enforced.
Activists and civilians resorting to flotillas to deliver aid is an indictment of international inaction. These missions exist as states and institutions have failed to uphold their legal and moral responsibilities toward Gaza. IFRD reaffirms its demand for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the imposition of targeted sanctions until Israel’s violations of international law end.
Humanitarian solidarity must not be met with drones and fire, but with action and accountability.
