Brussels, January 7, 2025—The International Federation for Rights and Development (IFRD) expresses its deep concern over the deportation of Egyptian-Turkish poet Abdel Rahman Youssef from Lebanon to the United Arab Emirates. We consider this action a blatant violation of human rights and freedom of expression.
Abdel Rahman Youssef, a poet and activist known for his outspoken stance against repression and human rights violations, faced the threat of forcible deportation without being afforded due process or the opportunity to challenge the deportation decision. This act represents a clear violation of international law, which prohibits forced deportation to countries where individuals may face torture or persecution.
The IFRD calls on the Lebanese authorities to adhere to their international obligations and respect the fundamental human rights of all individuals on their territory. We also urge the international community to act swiftly to pressure the concerned governments to ensure the safety of Abdel Rahman Youssef and to prevent him from being subjected to any rights violations.
We urge all relevant parties to respect basic human rights, including the right to freedom of expression and access to justice, and we call for the immediate release and safety of Abdel Rahman Youssef.
