Brussels— During a meeting at the European Parliament, Gamaal El Attar, Executive Director of the International Federation for Rights and Development (IFRD), emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive action plan to address ongoing human rights issues in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, especially regarding Palestine.
El Attar proposed organizing an exhibition featuring Palestinian and Gazan artists to raise awareness among diverse audiences, including liberal rights groups and LGBTQ+ communities. The exhibition aims to connect art with the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
He also suggested screening the documentary Life of the Goat, which highlights human rights conditions in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, despite concerns about potential censorship.
The meeting underscored the importance of firsthand testimonies in understanding critical issues. El Attar proposed hosting discussions with individuals who have lived experiences, including survivors from Gaza, to provide valuable insights that could foster empathy and understanding among Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
Events are planned for different times, with activities scheduled for late November and February.
The meeting also addressed recent reports about the deportation of Syrians and the existence of a detention camp in Albania. El Attar and Schot plan to bring these issues to the attention of the European Commissioner to ensure that discrepancies in the official narrative are addressed.
The IFRD reaffirms its commitment to advocating for human rights and raising awareness of critical issues affecting vulnerable groups in the MENA region. Through events and discussions, the organization aims to increase awareness, mobilize support, and inspire action toward meaningful change.
