IFRD Welcomes the Interventions of Iceland and the Netherlands in the Ongoing ICJ Case on Gaza

The International Federation for Rights and Development (IFRD) welcomes the recent interventions submitted by Icelandand the Netherlands before the International Court of Justice in the ongoing case concerning the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

These declarations represent an important contribution to the legal and moral weight of the proceedings. By clarifying the interpretation of key provisions of the Genocide Convention, both states have reinforced the urgency of ensuring accountability under international law and have underscored that the protection of civilian populations must remain at the center of the Court’s considerations.

IFRD considers these interventions a significant step in strengthening the international legal framework against genocide, including in relation to acts such as forced displacement, starvation, deprivation of humanitarian aid, and the destruction of conditions necessary for civilian survival. At a time when the people of Gaza continue to endure catastrophic suffering, these contributions send a clear signal that states cannot remain indifferent in the face of grave allegations under the Genocide Convention.

IFRD calls on the International Court of Justice to proceed with swift and decisive action and to deliver its final judgment without unnecessary delay. Justice delayed in the face of mass suffering risks becoming justice denied. The credibility of international law depends not only on principled interpretation, but also on timely adjudication when civilian lives are at stake.

The people of Gaza, and all those looking to international law as a shield against atrocity crimes, deserve clarity, accountability, and justice.
