Statement on the UNRWA / UN Human Rights Findings on Gaza

The latest United Nations findings — as highlighted by the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) — outline a deeply troubling humanitarian and human-rights crisis in the Gaza Strip, linked to the conduct of hostilities and the treatment of the civilian population. The report documents widespread destruction of neighbourhoods, the killing and maiming of civilians, and the spread of famine, all within a pattern of conditions that “appear to aim at a permanent demographic shift” in Gaza and raise serious concerns of ethnic cleansing, forcible displacement and denial of humanitarian assistance. It further details systemic abuses that have imposed conditions of life increasingly incompatible with Palestinians’ continued existence in Gaza as a group, consistent with findings from the UN Human Rights Office on both Gaza and the West Bank.

The report underscores the urgent need for accountability, respect for international humanitarian and human-rights law, protection of civilians, and unimpeded humanitarian access to address the severe deprivation and loss of life among the civilian population.
