A Landmark Victory for Human Rights – European Court Condemns Greece for Pushbacks

Brussels, [Date] – Today marks a significant milestone in the fight for human rights, as the European Court of Human Rights has issued a groundbreaking judgment condemning Greece for its systematic pushbacks of asylum seekers from Türkiye through the Evros region. This ruling is the first of its kind, shedding light on practices long-denounced by human rights advocates.

The case revolves around a Turkish refugee who fled her homeland due to political persecution and sought asylum in Greece in 2019. Instead of being granted refuge, she was forcibly returned to Türkiye, where she was subsequently arrested and detained, further victimized by the political oppression she was fleeing.

The Court’s findings are clear:

  • Greece has been systematically pushing back third-country nationals from the Evros region to Türkiye.
  • The complainant was illegally detained and subsequently pushed back by Greek authorities.
  • The Greek judicial system failed to effectively investigate the complainant’s criminal complaint.

Despite repeated denials from Greek authorities regarding the practice of pushbacks, this judgment confirms their reality and systematic nature. This ruling is a crucial recognition of the violation of human rights that many have been condemning for years.

We commend the Greek Council for Refugees for their courageous efforts in bringing this case to light. Their relentless advocacy has paved the way for this historic decision. We stand in solidarity with them, calling on the Greek authorities to immediately halt pushbacks and to conduct thorough investigations into all related complaints.

This judgment not only vindicates the victims of such practices but also sends a strong message that human rights violations will not be tolerated within the European Union. It is a call to action for all member states to uphold the principles of dignity, protection, and justice for all.
