During a Meeting with the Head of Vice President Cabinet, IFRD and Vice President Omarjee Discussed Future Action Plans Addressing Human Rights in MENA

Brussels, October 16, 2024 — During a pivotal meeting at the European Parliament, Gamaal El Attar, CEO of the International Federation for Rights and Development (IFRD), highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive action plan to address ongoing human rights concerns in Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, particularly about Palestine.

Proposed Initiatives: Exhibition and Documentary Screening

El Attar proposed an exhibition showcasing Palestinian and Gazan artists to raise awareness among diverse audiences, including liberal rights groups, LGBTQ communities, and advocates for women’s rights. The exhibition aims to forge a connection between art and the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting these regions. Potential locations, such as the second or third floors of the European Parliament, were discussed, although alternatives will be considered due to scheduling challenges. A live painting event is also planned to engage attendees more actively, with the exhibition set to last for one night.

In addition to the exhibition, Gamaal suggested screening the documentary Life of Goat, which aims to shed light on the human rights situation in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. While Radoslav Šoth, Head of VP Omarjee’s Cabinet, expressed support for the screening, they acknowledged the risk of potential censorship due to the film’s controversial nature. Combining this screening with other planned events could enhance visibility and impact.

Engaging Voices: Talks with Experts

The meeting also addressed the importance of firsthand accounts in understanding these critical issues. El Attar proposed hosting discussions featuring speakers with lived experiences, including individuals who have faced arrest or deportation, survivors from Gaza, and poets who can articulate the emotional and cultural dimensions of their experiences. These talks aim to foster empathy and understanding among European Parliament members and their staff.

Logistics and Next Steps

As the planning progressed, the events’ logistics were discussed, including the possibility of spreading activities over several days or condensing them into one week. Engaging multiple political parties is essential, a goal that Radoslav indicated is feasible within the parliamentary structure.

Budget concerns were raised, with Gamaal reassuring that the overall budget would be manageable, particularly since many guests are already in Brussels. Nonetheless, discussions will continue regarding funding sources.

Tentatively, the events are planned for late November and February, with further details to be finalized via email.

Addressing Broader Issues: Syrian Deportation and Concentration Camps

The conversation also touched on recent reports of Syrian deportations and the existence of a concentration camp in Albania since last year. El Attar and Šoth plan to raise these concerns with the European Commissioner, as discrepancies in the official narrative require clarification. They are also considering drafting a position paper to articulate their stance, with Radoslav committing to ensure it reaches the appropriate parliamentary channels.

The IFRD remains dedicated to advocating for human rights and raising awareness of critical issues affecting vulnerable populations in the MENA region. By facilitating discussions, exhibitions, and screenings, the organization aims to mobilize support and drive action towards meaningful change.
